Tribal notable in Syria’s Shaddadi calls for solidarity, avoidance of strife
SHADDADI, Syria (North Press) – On Monday, a tribal notable in the city of Shaddadi, northeast Syria, called for solidarity and for people to avoid being drawn into strife that strikes stability in the region.
In May, the cities of Manbij and Shaddadi witnessed protests that included sabotage operations affected public properties and civil foundations.
“Some want to sow sectarian strife, which will drive the region into continuous conflicts and disputes,” head of the Ministry and Religious Endowments and prominent Shaddadi notable Ahmed al-Issa said.
He warned the youth, sheikhs, and tribal notables of being driven into strife, through which “external parties seek to inflame a civil war among the residents of the region.”
On May 18, residents of several cities in northeast Syria protested against the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria’s (AANES) decision to raise fuel prices.
However, the protests in Shaddadi devolved into violence, including the use of weapons that led to the wounding of a number of civilians and members of the Internal Security Forces (Asayish), according to a statement by the Asayish.
On May 31, the city of Manbij witnessed protests, which activists said on social media were against mandatory service enacted by the Autonomous Administration in 2014 to be implemented later in all areas of its control.
However, the Manbij Military Council said in a statement that “the duty of self-defense has been carried out for seven years without any problems.”
The council accused parties, which it said are known for “exploiting economic conditions and the difficulties that the Syrians are experiencing in order to achieve goals and agendas that serve parties want to destabilize Manbij.”
On Thursday, tribal notables and sheikhs in Shaddadi issued a statement in which they condemned sabotage operations that affected the civil foundations and the public properties in Manbij and Shddadi.
On Sunday, tribes in Syria’s Manbij discussed their demands to submit them to the Civil Administration in Manbij.
“The residents’ demands are right, but they should be solved through dialogue, not by spreading destruction and chaos,” Sheikh al-Issa said.
