Over 50 wounded in celebrations over Assad victory in Syria’s Aleppo
ALEPPO, Syria (North Press) – On Thursday night, at least one person was killed and about 50 others were wounded during indiscriminate shooting by pro-Syrian government officials and armed men in the city of Aleppo, north Syria, after the current President Bashar Assad was declared the winner of the presidential elections for the fourth time.
A private medical source from the forensic medicine office in Aleppo, who preferred to be unnamed for security reasons, said that at midnight, they received the body of Yahya Nasser, who died as a result of a bullet wound.
Late Thursday night, pro-government individuals opened fire into the air following the announcement of Assad’s victory with 95.1% of the vote in elections that faced broad-scale international rejection.
“The bullet hit the young man in the head, killing him few minutes later,” according to the source.
“According to the reported information, several hospitals in the city of Aleppo received about 50 wounded with light and critical injures to the shoulder, forearm, and near the head,” the source added.
“A woman was shot in Saadallah al-Jabri Square in the city center and an ambulance at the site treated her,” a witness told North Press.
However, “as a result of the continuing indiscriminate and intense shooting, the driver lost control of the vehicle, which led to the door of the car opening so that both the victim and her escort fell down, causing her additional contusions,” he added.
“The square witnessed limited celebrations only by armed men of local defense forces in addition to security and military members affiliated with the Syrian government, while other people who were at the site looked like as they were not concerned about the issue,” the witness pointed out.
According to the government official results, the other candidates Abdallah Saloum Abdallah received 1.5% of the vote while Mahmoud Ahmed Marei got 3.3%.
Several casualties and wounded were recorded as a result of the indiscriminating shooting in most of the Syrian government-held areas; however, no official statistics on the number of the victims were published.
The official state Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) said that Assad will make a televised speech on Friday at 8:00 PM.
