Assad starts his election campaign, violating Syrian law

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – On Monday, a lawyer from Syria’s Damascus said that the election campaign for the three presidential candidates, according to the election law under Article 48, begins on the day following the announcement of the results of the grievance determination, which corresponds to today’s date.

On April 29, Luna al-Shibl announced the launch of the election campaign for the current president on the fifth of this month, in contravention of the general election law, and before the grievances are decided upon.

Muhammad Jihad al-Lahham, president of the Supreme Constitutional Court, said in a press conference Monday: “Candidates have the right to start electoral campaigns from next Sunday to the twenty-fourth of this month.”

The lawyer added to North Press that “Assad and his electoral team are violating Syrian law, according to what is in the constitution and as determined by the head of the Supreme Constitutional Committee.”

On Monday morning, the Supreme Constitutional Court announced the names of the candidates accepted to run in the elections.

Residents in the city of Damascus expressed their dissatisfaction with the way pictures and banners of Assad were distributed.

Muhammad Arabi (a pseudonym) told an employee working in al-Assad National Library that the Umayyad Square and its sub-streets are full of pictures and banners of the current president, distorting the general view.

No pictures or posters of the other candidates, Salloum Abdullah Salloum and Ahmed Marei, have appeared to this day.”
