Future Syria Party holds Turkey and Syria responsible for Euphrates water cut
RAQQA, Syria (North Press) – On Wednesday, head of the Future Syria Party Ibrahim al-Qaftan said that the Syrian and Turkish governments share responsibility for the suffering of the people of northeast Syria due to the water war waged by Turkey and ignored by the Syrian government.
While widespread denunciations of the Turkish government continue at various political and social levels in northern and eastern Syria, following the dangerous decline in the level of the Euphrates River, the Syrian government has taken any clear position on the matter.
Since last February, the level of the Euphrates River water has declined near the Tishreen and Euphrates (Tabqa) dams as a result of Turkey’s detention of water.
Turkey’s weaponization of water is something old and new at the same time, as it tries to put pressure on the residents of northeast Syria in particular, which will negatively affect the rest of Syria, al-Qaftan said.
He stated that the Syrian government bears a large part of the responsibility for its inability to adequately manage the crisis in Syria, and its failure to adhere to United Nations resolutions, such as Resolution 2254, on achieving a political transition that may resolve crises in the country.
In 1987, the Syrian and Turkish governments signed an agreement stipulating the allocation of 500 cubic meters per second for the flow of water into Syria.
Al-Qaftan mentioned that the increased hours of electricity rationing and the scarcity of water available to irrigate agricultural crops are all a result of the effects of the shortage of water in the Euphrates River.
Turkey will not be a state of peace in the region through these practices, but rather will destroy the infrastructure and economic in the region through the negative impact of cutting off water at all levels in northeast Syria, according to al-Qaftan.
Turkey’s main goal in their political Islam project promotes the revival of the Ottoman Empire and expansion in the territories of Syria, Iraq, and Libya through immoral interference that opposes the international calls and resolutions, he added.
