82 killed, more than 100 wounded in Baghdad hospital fire

ERBIL, Iraq (North Press) – 82 died and more than 110 were wounded in a hospital fire in the Iraqi capital Baghdad, the Iraqi Ministry of Interior announced on Sunday.

Late on Saturday, a fire broke out in the Ibn al-Khatib Hospital in Baghdad on a floor dedicated for the coronavirus patients.

The spokesman for Iraq’s interior ministry Khalid al-Muhanna said that the investigations are continuing in the Ibn al-Khatib Hospital fire to find out the circumstances of the accident, while he ruled out any criminal suspicion.

The spokesman called for not anticipating the events of the investigations.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi, called for an emergency session of the Council of Ministers to be held today against the backdrop of the tragic accident.

He also announced a three-day national mourning for the victims of the fire.

Today, Sunday, the Presidency of the House of Representatives of Iraq called for a session to be held tomorrow regarding the hospital accident.

The High Commission for Human Rights in Iraq called on the Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi, to ”immediately” remove the Minister of Health and Environment Hassan al-Tamimi, and the Ministry’s undersecretaries from their office.
