Syria’s Autonomous Administration warns of critical coronavirus situation in Derik
DERIK, Syria (North Press) – Health Committee spokeswoman in Qamishli Rojin Ahmed warned on Tuesday of a critical situation in Derik, in the far northeast of Syria, if the toll of coronavirus infections increases.
The coronavirus department at Derik Hospital received two suspected cases this morning, and nine infected cases, one of which was placed in intensive care unit, Ahmed told North Press.
Derik recorded 59 new coronavirus cases on Monday.
Ahmed added that the coronavirus department in Derik is still responding to severe cases and providing medical services to them, but if the number of infections increases, the situation will be critical and the number of oxygen tanks or protective devices will not suffice.
This warning comes on the first day of the new lockdown in northeast Syria.
On Saturday, the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) issued a decision to implement complete and partial lockdowns against coronavirus pandemic in its areas for a period of one week, starting from Tuesday, 6/4/2021.
Tuesday is the first day of a partial lockdown in Derik and the rest of the cities in northeastern Syria. The lockdown starts at 4 pm until 6 am the next day. Meanwhile, the cities of Qamishli, Raqqa and Hasakah are under total lockdown.
Ahmed indicated that all local administrations have the right to impose a lockdown in the areas they manage when the number of coronavirus cases increases.
On Monday, the Autonomous Administration imposed a full lockdown on the village of Derona Aghe in the eastern countryside of Qamishli, northeast Syria, after an outbreak of coronavirus among the villagers.
“35 families are infected with coronavirus in the village,” Afram Ishaq, co-chair of Qamishli district, said.
