The UN to raise $10 billion to support the displaced Syrians

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Tuesday, the United Nations declared their intent to urge international donors to pledge up to $10 billion to help Syrians fleeing the civil war amid the outbreak of coronavirus.

On Monday, the works of the 5th Brussels conference entitled “Supporting the future of Syria and the region” started under the co-chair of the EU and the UN.

In the conference, $4.2 billion will be demanded for the IDPs inside Syria and $5.8 billion for refugees and host countries in the Middle East.

About 24 million people need basic aid, an increase of 4 million during last year, which is the highest number since the start of the crisis in 2011.

“Ten years of despair and disaster have passed for Syrians,” UN coordinator for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief Mark Lowcock said.

“The deterioration of living conditions, economic decline, and Covid-19 are now leading to more hunger, malnutrition and disease. There is less fighting, but peace dividends have not materialized,” he added in a statement.
