Syria’s Suwayda schools record 11 coronavirus infections amid warnings

SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – On Sunday,Suwayda Health Directorate, southern Syria, recorded 11 cases of coronavirus infections among schoolchildren, bringing the number of the infections in the governorate to 889, including 95 deaths, amid experts’ warnings that hospitals are no longer able to receive patients. 

Suwayda is witnessing a significant increase in the number of coronavirus infections, and the number of patients inside the medical isolation departments at the Suwayda General Hospital has reached 48 infections, according to medical sources.

“11 new cases of coronavirus have been confirmed among students, in addition to 15 suspected cases in Suwayda primary schools,” Salem al-Masry, 55, a pseudonym for a medical official in the Suwayda Health Directorate, told North Press. 

“There is no response by the population to go to the Epidemiological Isolation Department at the Governmental Hospital in the city of Suwayda to conduct the necessary swabs,” al-Masry added.

Al-Masry indicated that “the number of home oxygen users registered in the Suwayda Health Directorate has reached more than 100 patients.”

“This increase is a very dangerous indication of an intensification of the viral attack,” he stressed.

Early last week, 110 confirmed infections were recorded in schools from which samples were taken, including 39 in Tartus, 33 in Damascus and 16 in Rif Dimashq, according to government sources.

Since the beginning of the second semester, 410 infections have been recorded, including 100 students, and 310 teachers and administrative officials in the public education sector.

A government medical source from inside the state-owned hospital,Zaid al-Shariti in the city of Suwayda told North Press that the medical isolation department inside the hospital is no longer able to receive new cases.
