Suwayda’s Men of Dignity hold Syrian government responsible for country collapse

SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – On Friday, the Men of Dignity Movement blamed the Syrian government  for the total economic, social, and security collapse in Suwayda and the whole country, through a statement issued by the movement that coincided with the anniversary of the death of Sultan Pasha al-Atrash.

al-Atrash was a prominent Arab Druze leader, Syrian nationalist and Commander General of the Syrian Revolution (1925–27). He died on March 26, 1982.

On Friday, residents of the town of al-Qrayya shouted, while celebrating the anniversary of the death of al-Atrash, to “bring down the Syrian President, Bashar Assad,” and condemned the resumption of corruption in Syria.

One of the sheikhs of the movement told North Press that the release of the statement by the Men of Dignity Movement is a “strongly worded message to the government” that bears responsibility for the deteriorating economic and security conditions in Suwayda.

He added, “The statement called on the government to open the crossings with neighboring countries again to ease the suffering of the population, and denounced the government’s failure to respond to the residents’ demands.”

He pointed out that although the statement meant to talk about Suwayda, it “bore some commonalities with the common Syrian concern.”
