Syria needs political solution: senior UN relief official

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – In the tenth anniversary of the Syrian crisis, the UN Regional Humanitarian Coordinator for the Syria Crisis, Muhannad Hadi said on Monday, “Syria needs a political solution, it needs an end to this bloody 10-year war.”

Hadi stressed the need for humanitarian action, “it is a very helpful solution in restoring security and building confidence, but the solution that everyone awaits is a political one.”

Hadi touched on the situation in Hawl camp, which is run by the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES).

“The residents of Hawl camp face many problems and the most important of which is the security situation,” he added.

“We are working with the local authorities to provide them with assistance, so that the security situation there may be somewhat acceptable at least,” he noted.

He pointed out that in the past weeks and months the camp witnessed killings and assassinations of some of the camp’s residents.

He appealed to the donor countries and the member states that have influence on the local authorities to take action to secure the residents of the camp, stressing the need to find sustainable solutions until countries repatriate their citizens.

Since the beginning of 2021, the camp has recorded more than 35 deaths, in addition to more than 10 injuries and killing attempts, according to a security source in the camp.

The UN Coordinator also mentioned that there are more than 13 million Syrians in need of humanitarian aid, and this aid includes food and non-food items, such as education, shelter and potable water.

UN organizations and partners are working to secure this aid for the Syrians, but the aid provided does not cover all the needs in Syria, it rather covers the most affected and needy segment, according to Hadi.
