Doubts about hiding of numbers of infections with coronavirus in Syria’s Damascus

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) –With the daily increased numbers of infections with  coronavirus in Damascus,  doubts grow that Syrian Health Ministry hides the real numbers of infections with coronavirus due to reasons related to parliamentary elections, fears by Syrian Government of people's demands to stop the elections, in addition to the fragile economic situation and the closure of the industrial and economic companies, which in turn may affect what remained of the economy.

Hospitals in Damascus, witness a daily influx of dozens of infected people with coronavirus, and it has become a focus of the epidemic amid the possibility of being out of control, especially after the increase in the number of infections that included even medical staffs, the last of whom were in the hospital of Mowasat and Mojtahed, according to a worker at the Mowasat Hospital.

 

On the regard of the way the Syrian health authorities deal with new developments, Yassin Nabelsi, who works in Medical equipment maintenance, said “coronavirus widely spread in Damascus, and the number of infections hiked, some cases which arrive to hospitals and others are hidden because of the fear of Damascus' people of the quarantine measures that the Health Ministry imposes.”

 

He added that "A lot of people who have some of flu symptoms, are not tested, rather, forced to be quarantined in endemic places, the thing that makes them infected."

 

He pointed out that there is no accurate treatment protocol, some unavailable medical drugs are replaced with other useless ones, the commitment to medication system with the patient is the responsibility of the hospital’s administration, in light of increasing need for ventilators, and there are cases that do not receive proper health care.

 

An employee in Syrian Ministry of Health Mazen Ahmad told North Press that “Health-screening office receives calls regarding many infections, to be quarantined by well-prepared teams. during the past two days about 46 cases were revealed and were distributed to hospitals in the capital.”

 

Ahmad stressed that the number of deaths in Damascus are increasing, and are not announced, fearing that people abstain from going to hospitals and quarantine  centers.     

 

He added that “People who  die in the hospital due to coronavirus, are placed in a special bags and their coffins is closed tightly, to be to buried in specific places, with the presence of one of his family."

 

Syrian Health Ministry announced 21 new infections with coronavirus on Wednesday, five of which recovered and one died. Moreover, the Ministry of Health revealed in a statement that the number of infections reached 561 cases, of which 165 recovered and 32 died.
