Human rights group: 29 women killed in Turkey in March

A women's rights group reported that 29 women were killed in March 2020. The deaths were reported via the platform “We Will Stop Women's Murder”, which aims to protect women from violence and monitor all kinds of violations of women's rights.
The lockdown and social distancing measures implemented to confront the novel coronavirus epidemic in Turkey led to fatal results for some women.

According to the platform, Turkish men killed 29 women in March this year. Of these, 21 women were killed in the 20 days since March 11, when the Turkish government advised people to stay at home to avoid the spread of coronavirus.

Rejection of a donation campaign

The Turkish opposition's website “Turkey Now” stated that 76 Turkish institutions issued a joint statement to reject the donation campaign called by Turkish president Erdogan, under the pretext of helping victims of the coronavirus.

The Turkish opposition considered Erdogan's invitation a mean to defraud the people in light of financing giant projects such as the Istanbul Canal.

The Turkish institutions that rejected the invitation of the Turkish President made it clear: "We do not need political exploitation, embargoes, polarizing stances, and opportunism from the epidemic, but rather solidarity, transparency, correct information, and more democracy than ever before."

The statement said: "The answer is clear, the country's resources have been spent on capital, Turkish nationalist institutions, the war in Syria, the war in Libya, the one-thousand-room palace, Ahlat Palace, Marmaris Palace, and the 12-aircraft fleet for the president.”

The institutions indicated that the treasury of the country is now empty, and the people, the vast majority of whom are poor and workers, are asked to donate. Moreover, a mandatory tax will be taken from the salaries of workers in some institutions. "But no one expects us to agree to that," institutions said.
