Water level rises in Derik dams, not a threat says Water Directorate

The level of the reservoir dams has risen to the maximum level in the town of Derik after the recent wave of rainstorms in the areas of northeastern Syria.

The Director of the Water Department in Derik, Muhammed Amin Haji, told North-Press that the water level of three dams in Derik exceeded maximum storage capacity.

Haji pointed out that the excess water overflows from the three dams, Burza, Hekmiya, and al-Safan, noting that they monitor the dams in cooperation with the water resources on an ongoing basis, and their current status is safe.

After the flood of the Burza Dam, some locals headed to the dam area for fishing before security forces came and evacuated the area to prevent gatherings, as part of the implementation of the lockdown imposed by the Autonomous Administration in North and East Syria as a precautionary measure to prevent the coronavirus epidemic.

The storage capacity of the Burza Dam is 4.5 million cubic meters, the capacity of Hekmiya Dam is 6 to 7 million cubic meters, while the storage capacity of the al-Safan Dam ranges between 48 and 49 million cubic meters, according to the director of the Water Department in Derik.
