Death toll in Derik’s Newroz camp rises to seven

On Friday evening and Saturday, seven people lost their lives due to a fire that broke out in one of the tents in the Newroz IDP camp in the northeastern Syrian city of Derik, which houses hundreds of displaced people from Sere-Kaniye (Ras al-Ain) and its countryside.    

On Friday evening, 4 people lost their lives and 7 others were injured in the fire. The injured were transferred to Derik hospitals before arriving at Hasakah’s al-Sha’ab Hospital after a number of private hospitals in the cities of Derik and Qamishlo refused to receive them, according to the camp’s administration.

Those injured by the fire arrived late after midnight Friday-Saturday to receive treatment. Three of them died in the hospital; three remained in the hospital in critical condition while another was stabilized and released. 

The Medical Director at al-Sha’ab Hospital in Hasakah, Dr. Antar Sino, told North Press that “at one in the morning last night, we received burn cases from Newroz camp in the city of Derik. There were seven people, two of which were burned over 90% of their bodies; they died at dawn on Saturday. Another child died because the percentage of burns was very high and it was spread all over his body.”  

“Now we have three people from one family, including a woman and a child, who are in very bad condition,” he added.
