UN regrets the death of eight people in Newroz camp fire

Yesterday, Sunday, the United Nations team in Syria expressed its condolences over the death of eight people in an accidental explosion in the Newroz camp in Hasakah governorate, northeastern Syria.

"The United Nations is deeply saddened by the news of the death of eight people, including six children from the same family, in an incident that occurred in the Newroz camp this week," humanitarian coordinator Imran Riza in Syria said in a statement.

"On behalf of the United Nations team in Syria, I send our sincere condolences to the family, and to all those in the Newroz camp who were affected by this terrible event," he added.

He pointed out that the incident confirms the "difficult circumstances of millions of Syrians who were forced to leave their homes."

He stressed that the United Nations and humanitarian workers will continue to support displaced families throughout Syria.

On Sunday, the number of victims of the explosion reached seven. On Monday, sources from the Kurdish Red Crescent confirmed to North-Press that the number of victims has risen to eight, while three others are still in hospitals in the city of Hasakah.

Last Friday, the explosion of a pressure cooker and a heater inside one of the tents in the Newroz camp in the city of Derik led to the deaths of four people, while seven others were transferred to the hospitals of the cities of Derik and Hasakah. Four others later lost their lives as a result of their severe injuries.

It's worth mentioning that 103 displaced families from Sere-Kaniye (Ras al-Ain) and Tal Abyad, in addition to IDPs from the Kobani and Afrin areas north of Aleppo, live in the Newroz camp, according to the camp administration.
