“Syrians for Truth and Justice” (a Syrian organization defending human rights) presented a document to the UN General Assembly requesting to shed light on the deteriorated situation in the Syrian-Kurdish region of Afrin.
The document was entitled: “A call for action about the situation in Afrin region, serious concerns among indigenous and displaced people about the preservation of their assets”.
The organization appeals to the international community to “participate in addressing the abuses in Afrin actively, such as accountability for violations under international law, and the application of appropriate practices to consider these issues within the framework of the procedures for dealing with Syrian issues”.
The appeal states that the military operation carried out by the Turkish army with the help of the “Free Syrian Army”, led to “serious repercussions, including serious violations of the international law”.
The paper added that the number of arrests exceeded 80 cases only in August of this year, in addition to highlighting the threats of the identity of the population of the region, and mentioned cases of violation against historical, cultural and religious sites.
In the proposed recommendations to the international community, the organization stressed on the need to “deal with the issue of Afrin region as part of the agenda of the United Nations General Assembly to address the issues of the Syrian conflict”, in addition to “urging Turkey and the armed opposition groups to abide by the international standards”.
In its latest report, September 11, the International Independent Inquiry Commission in Syria said that, human rights violations by the Syrian National Army such as kidnapping, torture, extortion and repeated assassinations are still continued in the region of Afrin.
