The pro-Syrian government newspaper “Al-Watan” has quoted websites of the Syrian opposition groups as saying that Russian ground forces were deployed in the area of Albukamal, west of the Euphrates River on the Syrian-Iraqi borders.

The sources said that the Russian forces were stationed in al-Jala district in the neighborhoods of Albukamal, located on the opposite bank of Euphrates to the town of Hajin, which is controlled by the Global Coalition-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

The sources also added that the Russian forces began to establish special headquarters for their forces on the main road of Mayadeen – Albukamal in the eastern countryside of Deir ez Zor, amid tightened security in the region.

The sources pointed out that this is the first time the Russian forces enter the area of Albukamal, following the Iranian forces’ control over the area, which was led by the commander of al-Quds Corps of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, Qasem Suleimani, with the support of the Russian Air Forces, at the end of 2017.
