In a statement to its officials, the United Nations has accused the Syrian government of involvement in “genocide crimes” against its own people in Syria since 2011.

The United Nations, by the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo has declared that the Syrian government is involved in “genocide crimes, sexual violence, and rape against its opponents, allies, and sympathizers with the armed opposition groups.”

“More than 100,000 Syrians have been detained, kidnapped or disappeared since 2011,” DiCarlo said, noting that the Syrian government is primarily responsible for this.

During a UN Security Council session in New York, she reiterated the Secretary-General António Guterres’ calls, which include: “The need to refer the situation in Syria to the International Criminal Court.”

DiCarlo also stressed that all those involved in the conflict in Syria should seek the release of all detainees arbitrarily, and provide information about the fate of detainees, abductees, missing and forcibly disappeared persons, in implementation of the international law.

She also revealed the lack of documented statistics, as the United Nations and its teams were not allowed access to places of detention inside Syria, considering that “ISIS and Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) are two terrorist organizations inserted on the Security Council’s list of terrorist organizations, and they are involved in committing heinous crimes”.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has revealed the death of 16,072 civilians who had been documented by names since 2011 out of 104,000 people killed in Syrian government prisons.

The Syrian Observatory added that among the total number of casualties, more than (83%) were “eliminated, killed and died” inside these detention prisons between May 2013 and October 2015.

The Syrian Observatory also pointed out that more than 30,000 of them were killed in Sednaya Military Prison, while the second majority number of victims was within the Air Force Intelligence Directorate, which was run by Major General Jamil al-Hassan.
