UNHCR says nearly 1.8 million Syrian refugees return home
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Nearly 1.8 million Syrian refugees have returned from abroad since December 2024, according to the latest figures from the UN refugee agency.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said 1,795,641 Syrian refugees had returned to the country as of September 3, 2026.
The figures show that 718,611 refugees returned from Lebanon, 704,378 from Türkiye, and 296,156 from Jordan.
Separately, UNHCR estimated that 2,009,506 internally displaced Syrians had returned to their areas of origin between December 2024 and September 3, 2026.
The returns followed the fall of the Bashar al-Assad government in December 2024.
UNHCR continues to monitor the return of Syrian refugees and internally displaced people and provide assistance to returnees in their areas of return.
