Syria says it made progress on nuclear issues, awaits IAEA delegation
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Syria affirmed on Tuesday continued cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United States and other countries to address the legacy of the former government and advance the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
In a statement, the Syrian Atomic Energy Commission said cooperation with the IAEA and international partners aims to activate Syria’s full membership in the agency and support the country’s peaceful nuclear applications, including in health, food and scientific research.
The commission said it has made “tangible progress” since what it described as the country’s liberation, relying on its national capabilities despite limited technical resources and insufficient international support.
It renewed its call for the establishment of a specialized international committee to provide the technical and legal assistance needed to complete procedures in line with international standards.
Syria said an IAEA delegation is expected to visit the country in the coming days. During the visit, the two sides are expected to jointly announce what Damascus described as significant progress in the nuclear field.
The statement comes as Syria seeks to rebuild cooperation with international institutions following the fall of the former government and to restore its role in international organizations.
The commission said its cooperation with the IAEA remains “close and transparent,” emphasizing that its nuclear activities are focused on peaceful applications.
