Al-Sharaa meets US envoy Thomas Barrack, Congress delegation in Ankara
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa met on Wednesday with a delegation of US Congress members and the US Special Presidential Envoy for Syria and Iraq, Thomas Barrack, in the Turkish capital, Ankara, according to the Syrian Presidency.
The meeting was attended by Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, the Presidency said in a statement published on its official channels. No further details were released regarding the discussions.
Earlier on Wednesday, al-Sharaa arrived in Ankara as the second day of the 36th NATO Summit continued in the Turkish capital.
The summit opened on Tuesday with the Defense Industry Forum, which focused on transatlantic defense production and included a series of meetings attended by defense and foreign ministers from NATO member states.
NATO heads of state and government are scheduled to convene later on Wednesday at the Presidential Complex in Ankara.
The summit is attended by several world leaders, including US President Donald Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Slovak President Peter Pellegrini, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Bulgarian President Rumen Radev, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, and Montenegrin Prime Minister Milojko Spajić.
Türkiye is hosting a NATO summit for the second time in its history, following the alliance’s 2004 summit in Istanbul.
