MSF ends support for Darat Izza healthcare center in northwest Syria
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières – MSF) on Wednesday announced the conclusion of its support for the Darat Izza healthcare center in the western countryside of Aleppo, northwest Syria, after more than three years of medical and humanitarian work in the area.
MSF said it had supported the center since December 2022, helping strengthen healthcare services for residents and displaced communities affected by years of conflict and instability.
The organization stated that the decision reflects efforts to focus resources on areas with more urgent medical needs across northwest Syria, while continuing to monitor healthcare gaps and respond where necessary.
During its operations at the center, MSF provided general consultations, pediatric and maternal healthcare, reproductive health services, emergency care, laboratory testing, and mental health support.
According to the organization, its teams delivered around 170,215 outpatient consultations, 18,950 maternal and child health consultations, and 7,660 mental health sessions between 2022 and 2026.
“MSF has been providing support to this centre for the past three years, during which we have assisted over 180,000 patients,” said Ammar Misto, director of Darat Izza healthcare center.
MSF added that its teams also carried out outreach activities and mobile clinic services in surrounding villages and displacement camps, in addition to supporting water, sanitation, and hygiene projects to reduce public health risks.
The organization noted that mental health services formed a key part of its work, amid ongoing psychological challenges caused by conflict and displacement.
Before ending operations, MSF handed over services to the Syrian Ministry of Health and provided a three-month supply of medicines and medical donations to support continued treatment at the facility.
