QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – More than 190,000 registered Syrian refugees have returned from Jordan to Syria since December 8, 2024, a spokesperson for the United Nations refugee agency said on Monday.
Yousef Taha, spokesperson for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Jordan, stated during an interview with the Al-Mamlaka TV program “Voice of the Kingdom” that 16,000 Syrians returned to their country since the beginning of 2026.
According to Taha, the monthly breakdown of returns includes 4,500 refugees in January, 3,900 in February, 3,400 in March, and 4,000 in April.
He added that 58 percent of returnees went back as families, while 42 percent returned individually. Taha noted that 46,000 of those who returned had been living in refugee camps, specifically Zaatari Camp and Azraq Camp, accounting for 24 percent of the total number of returnees.
Taha also said that the current population of Syrian refugees in the two camps stands at 81,000, including 48,000 in Zaatari Camp and 33,000 in Azraq Camp.
He explained that 76 percent of the remaining returnees had been residing in urban areas across Jordan, including the governorates of Amman, Irbid, Mafraq, and Zarqa.
Regarding destinations inside Syria, Taha indicated that most returnees headed to the governorates of Daraa, Homs, Rural Damascus, Aleppo, Damascus, and Hama.
