Asayish arrest man after shooting at Kurdish flag in Syria’s Qamishli

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Kurdish Internal Security Forces, known as the Asayish, announced on Saturday the arrest of a man who fired at a Kurdish flag in the city of Qamishli in northeastern Syria, in what authorities described as an attempt to stir unrest and undermine social cohesion in the area.

In a statement, the Asayish said their units detained Hussein al-Hesso following an incident at Zouri Roundabout at the southern entrance of Qamishli, where he opened fire toward the Kurdish flag.

The forces said al-Hesso was located after tracking his movements and gathering intelligence, followed by a “precise security operation” carried out at 3:00 a.m.

The Asayish added that the operation was conducted in coordination with the General Security affiliated with the Syrian transitional government.

According to the statements, preliminary investigations indicate that the act was intended to provoke tension and create confusion among the components of the region, which the Asayish described as enjoying coexistence and social harmony.

Authorities also said that al-Hesso has a prior criminal record, including involvement in a kidnapping case several days earlier.

The Asayish stressed that the detainee will undergo a comprehensive investigation to uncover the full circumstances of the incident before being referred to the judiciary in accordance with applicable laws.

The General Security Directorate of the Syrian government is expected to release further details on the case at a later time.

The forces urged residents of the region to exercise restraint and avoid being drawn into attempts to incite discord, reaffirming their commitment to protecting civil peace and safeguarding symbols considered significant to the local population.
