U.S. extends work authorization for Syrians under TPS after court order
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) issued on Wednesday updated guidance extending work authorization for Syrians protected under Temporary Protected Status (TPS), following court-ordered stays that halted earlier efforts to terminate the program.
In late March, USCIS updated its Form I-9 and E-Verify instructions, confirming that certain Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) issued to TPS beneficiaries from Syria are administratively extended through July 1, 2026.
The new guidance replaces earlier employer instructions and aligns procedures for both Syrian and Haitian TPS holders.
The decision means Syrian nationals legally residing in the United States under TPS can continue working without interruption while legal proceedings over the program’s future continue in U.S. courts.
Employers are now instructed to accept the extended validity of these EADs for verification purposes.
The update follows recent legal challenges that paused the termination of TPS designations for several countries, including Syria, where ongoing instability, security risks, and humanitarian conditions remain a concern.
As previously reported, thousands of Syrians in the U.S. depend on TPS protections that allow them to live and work legally while conflict and political uncertainty persist in their homeland.
The latest USCIS notice offers temporary clarity for both workers and employers, pending final judicial rulings on the status of the program.
