QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Residents in the western countryside of Qamishli gathered on Wednesday to light the Newroz flame atop Tell Mozan, marking the approach of the annual celebration observed by Kurds and other communities worldwide.
The event was organized by the “White Hope” organization in cooperation with the Qamishli municipality, drawing hundreds of participants who carried torches to the hill in a symbolic act tied to the occasion.
Newroz, celebrated on March 21 each year, holds cultural and historical significance, particularly among Kurdish communities, symbolizing renewal and continuity.
Dilav Assad, a resident of Qamishli who attended the event, said, “Today, hundreds of young men and women are carrying torches to light the Newroz flame on Tell Mozan. This place holds symbolic importance for Kurds, so we wanted to start from here.”
She added, “Through this event, we want to send a message that no matter what our regions face, including attacks and other challenges, no one can prevent us from lighting the Newroz flame, and it will remain lit despite all circumstances.”
Local celebrations of Newroz are held annually across northeast Syria, where communities gather in public spaces under the security framework maintained by local authorities.
