SDF commander confirms 1,070 detainees in Syrian prisons
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), General Mazloum Abdi, met on Saturday with a committee representing families of detainees and missing persons to discuss the status of prisoners held in Syrian jails. He emphasized that their case remains a central issue within the framework of the January 29 integration agreement.
General Abdi stated that he had been officially informed of 1,070 detainees in Syrian prisons, including civilians and military personnel. He highlighted that the matter receives the highest priority and cannot be compromised under any circumstances.
According to Abdi, intensive efforts are underway to address the issue within a specified timeline, and the return of detainees to their families is expected in the near term. He noted that several prisoners from both sides were released in recent days as part of practical steps to resolve the matter.
Abdi also stressed that the detainee issue is a key commitment of the January agreement, pointing out that the Syrian president affirmed its importance at the time of signing. In line with this, the ongoing plan includes releasing prisoners held in northern and eastern Syria as part of a rehabilitation and prison-clearing program.
The SDF commander praised the heroic role of detained fighters, stating that their sacrifices and steadfastness during recent battles were crucial in protecting civilians. He reaffirmed the importance of reuniting detainees with their families to resume their lives and contribute to a secure future.
