DEIR EZZOR, Syria (North Press) – Residents in the countryside of Deir ez-Zor near the Syrian–Iraqi border discovered on Saturday a weapons depot that allegedly belonged to Iranian-backed militias, a local source told North Press.
The source said a group of residents from al-Heri village, east of Deir ez-Zor, found an underground tunnel containing a weapons storage facility inside Syrian territory, administratively near the Iraqi border.
The discovery was made while they were searching the area for mushrooms.
According to the source, residents immediately informed the relevant authorities, who rushed to the site. Inside the depot, officials reportedly found flags and insignia linked to Iran, along with various types of weapons.
The source noted that locals had previously been unable to approach the area, as it was under the control of militias affiliated with Iran.
The border region has long been considered a strategic corridor for Iran-backed armed groups operating between Syria and Iraq, and has witnessed repeated security incidents and airstrikes in recent years.
