Barzani, Syrian FM discuss Syria situation and regional stability
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani met on Saturday Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani to discuss developments in Syria and the importance of resolving ongoing crises while safeguarding the rights of all communities, according to the Kurdistan Region Presidency.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference as part of Barzani’s official agenda, the presidency said in a statement published on its website.
“Today afternoon, within the framework of his agenda at the Munich Security Conference, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani met with Syrian Foreign Minister Mr. Asaad al-Shaibani,” the statement read.
During the meeting, both sides discussed relations between Syria, Iraq, and the Kurdistan Region, as well as recent developments in Syria and their implications for regional security and stability.
The discussions also focused on the need to reach solutions to Syria’s ongoing crises and ensure the protection of the rights of all Syrian communities, according to the statement.
The Kurdistan Region Presidency reported that the Syrian foreign minister praised the role of the Kurdistan Region’s leadership in helping facilitate an agreement between Damascus and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), as well as its assistance to displaced populations and efforts aimed at maintaining stability in the region.
Barzani stressed “the importance of protecting Kurdish rights in the future constitution of a unified Syria,” the presidency added.
The meeting comes amid continued diplomatic engagement concerning Syria’s political process, with regional actors emphasizing dialogue and arrangements that support stability and address humanitarian and governance challenges across the country.
