Syrian Democratic Council  calls for national unity and trust-building

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) on Saturday in a statement called for rebuilding trust among Syria’s diverse communities, preventing sectarian tensions, and strengthening Arab-Kurdish partnerships.

The council emphasized that the current phase in Syria requires bolstering the role of civil and political forces as the true guarantors of national unity and stability, “away from logic of dominance or exclusion,” according to the statement.

“Overcoming the challenges facing Syria requires a comprehensive national discourse based on dialogue and mutual understanding among different components, away from policies of marginalization and division,” the SDC statement said.

The council highlighted that reinforcing cooperation between political and societal forces provides a solid foundation to maintain civil peace, pointing to civil and democratic actors as essential pillars for building a unified Syria capable of achieving stability and development.

“Protecting the country’s unity requires coordinated national efforts and joint action to thwart attempts to sow discord, and to strengthen shared values of coexistence among all Syrians,” the statement added.

SDC affirmed its commitment to maintaining both national and international relationships that support stability, counter-terrorism, and the protection of rights and freedoms, “within the framework of respecting Syrian sovereignty and the will of its people.”

The council also referred to the recent agreement between the Syrian Interim Government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) as a step within a complex process aimed at de-escalation, preventing further chaos, and preparing conditions for a political phase that addresses the root causes of the conflict.

The statement noted that the practical success of any political or security understandings will be measured by their ability to protect civilians, guarantee civil and political rights, ensure the safe and dignified return of displaced persons, and preserve social stability and communal peace.

The SDC concluded that strengthening partnerships across Syria’s political and social spectrum remains essential to safeguarding the country’s stability and advancing inclusive governance.
