PUK president condemns attacks on Kurds in Syria, urges U.S. protection

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), Bafel Jalal Talabani, strongly condemned on Tuesday recent developments in Syria and “Rojava”, describing them as “unacceptable” and calling for immediate international action to protect civilians.

In a statement posted on X, Talabani denounced what he termed “an act of barbarism against the Kurdish people,” stressing that “the Kurdish people will not stay silent or look the other way.”

He recalled the heavy sacrifices made by Syrian Kurds during the war against the Islamic State (ISIS), noting that “Rojava lost thousands of its sons and daughters in the fight against ISIS, defending the world at a tremendous cost.”

Talabani emphasized that the people of North and East Syria “deserve respect, dignity, and real protection,” warning that continued violence threatens both civilians and regional stability.

He called directly on the United States and the American public to “act with clarity and responsibility” to safeguard civilians and prevent further escalation.

The PUK president’s remarks come amid heightened tensions in northern Syria, where local authorities and communities have repeatedly appealed for stronger international guarantees for civilian protection and political stability.
