Water cut to al-Aqtan prison in Raqqa as ISIS tries to escape – SDF commander
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – A Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) commander who remains inside al-Aqtan prison north of Raqqa, Syria, said on Tuesday that conditions have begun to deteriorate after “Damascus factions” cut off water to the facility, which holds members of the Islamic State (ISIS), in addition to a severe shortage of food supplies.
“Damascus factions are continuing their attacks and siege on al-Aqtan prison,” the commander, who is stationed inside the prison with a number of SDF fighters, told North Press. “Our forces are repelling these assaults, but the situation is extremely dire.”
He called for immediate international intervention to rescue the fighters, protect the prison, and prevent the escape of dozens of ISIS detainees.
He noted that they have so far thwarted two escape attempts, stating that ISIS inmates managed to break one of the prison cells.
Earlier on Tuesday, the SDF held Damascus fully responsible for any humanitarian or security consequences resulting from cutting water to al-Aqtan prison in Raqqa.
