SDF foils attacks near Kobani, warns of humanitarian crisis in ISIS prison
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said on Tuesday that two consecutive attack attempts by forces of the Syrian transitional government occurred in the town of Sirrin, south of Kobani, northern Syria, during the early morning hours, adding that their forces repelled both assaults.
In a statement, the SDF said the clashes on that front resulted in the destruction of a large number of military vehicles and armored units belonging to the attacking forces, killing those inside.
The statement added that on the Abu Sira front, SDF fighters carried out a precise strike against one of the military convoys of the government forces, forcing it to retreat and flee the area.
Meanwhile, another attempted advance along the axis of Khan Mamad village, southeast of Kobani, was thwarted after the government forces sustained heavy blows that foiled their plan and forced them to withdraw, according to the SDF.
The SDF stressed that its forces, along with the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ), remain on full alert to confront any aggression and will continue to defend their people and land.
In a separate statement, the SDF held the Syrian transitional government fully responsible for any humanitarian or security repercussions resulting from the cutting of water supplies to al-Aqtan Prison for detainees of the Islamic State (ISIS), north of Raqqa.
According to the statement, after besieging al-Aqtan Prison and directly shelling its buildings and facilities, Government forces cut off water to the prison, which houses Islamic State (ISIS) detainees. This move, the SDF said, has caused a severe water shortage, alongside major deficiencies in food and medical supplies.
The SDF described these actions as a “”blatant violation of humanitarian standards and pose a serious threat to the lives of the detainees,” and called on international organizations to intervene urgently to ensure the provision of basic necessities at the prison.
