Government forces attack SDF near ISIS prison in Raqqa despite ceasefire
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said on Monday that forces of the Syrian transitional government continue to carry out attacks in Ain Issa, al-Shaddadi, and Raqqa, despite a ceasefire agreement.
In a statement, the SDF reported that intense clashes are currently underway between its forces and government forces near al-Aqtan Prison in Raqqa, which holds detainees from the Islamic State (ISIS).
“At this time, violent clashes are taking place between our forces and those factions in the vicinity of Al-Aqtan Prison in Raqqa, which houses detainees of the ISIS terrorist organization, representing an extremely dangerous development,” the statement said.
The SDF warned that the level of threat is “escalating significantly” amid attempts by the attacking forces to reach and seize control of the prison, cautioning that such a development could have serious security repercussions, threaten stability, and open the door to renewed chaos and terrorism.
“We present these facts to the public and hold the attacking parties fully responsible for any catastrophic consequences that may result from the continuation of these attacks,” the statement added.
