AANES calls for international probe into Aleppo violations
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) on Sunday called on the international community, the United Nations, and human rights organizations to establish an independent international committee to investigate violations committed against civilians in Aleppo’s Kurdish-majority neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh.
In a statement released on its official platforms, AANES stressed that ignoring such crimes or failing to expose them “will place the entire international community before serious questions regarding its commitment to justice and human rights.”
The statement expressed deep concern over what it described as “grave violations amounting to war crimes” carried out by factions affiliated with the Syrian government in Damascus. According to AANES, evidence indicates that some of those involved are former members of the Islamic State (ISIS).
Despite previous understandings, the administration said violations continue “systematically,” including arbitrary arrests, insults, humiliation, and mistreatment of civilians. These practices, the statement added, constitute “a flagrant violation of international laws, conventions, and norms that guarantee the protection of civilians during times of conflict.”
The appeal comes amid ongoing reports of wounded civilians from Aleppo’s Kurdish neighborhoods being transferred to hospitals in Hasakah, highlighting the human toll of the violence.
AANES reiterated its demand for accountability, urging international bodies to take immediate steps to investigate and prosecute those responsible. The administration emphasized that the persistence of such abuses undermines regional stability and contravenes international humanitarian standards.
The statement concluded by calling for urgent international action to ensure the protection of civilians and to prevent further violations in Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh.
