EU expresses concern over deadly Aleppo clashes
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The European Union (EU) expressed on Thursday deep concern over the ongoing violence in Aleppo, northern Syria, calling for restraint and the protection of civilians in areas affected by clashes.
Since Tuesday, neighborhoods in Aleppo have witnessed heavy fighting between Syrian government forces and the Internal Security Forces (Asayish). The confrontations have left more than 100 people dead or injured, most of them civilians, according to local reports.
EU spokesperson Anwar al-Anouni said in a statement, “We call on all parties to exercise restraint, protect civilians, and seek a peaceful and diplomatic solution.” His remarks underscored the urgency of de-escalation as the humanitarian toll continues to rise.
The clashes have disrupted daily life in Aleppo’s northern districts, where residents face restricted access to services and growing insecurity. The Asayish, operating under the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), have been engaged in efforts to stabilize the situation and prevent further civilian casualties.
The EU statement came on the eve of a scheduled visit to Damascus by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa. The two leaders are expected to hold talks with Syrian officials on the current crisis and broader political developments.
The EU has repeatedly emphasized the importance of dialogue and humanitarian protection in Syria, urging all actors to prioritize civilian safety and avoid escalation.
