SDF foils ISIS attack on military post in Deir ez-Zor
DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced late Wednesday that they had foiled an attack carried out by cells of the Islamic State (ISIS) in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, eastern Syria.
In a statement, the SDF said that an ISIS cell attempted to target one of its military positions in the town of al-Marashidah, east of Deir ez-Zor, but the attack was thwarted.
According to the statement, the ISIS cell used an RPG launcher in addition to automatic weapons during the assault.
The SDF said its forces responded to the source of fire, successfully preventing the attack without sustaining any material damage or casualties among its ranks.
The statement added that SDF forces immediately launched a wide security sweep in the surrounding area to pursue the attackers and secure the site.
In a related development, the SDF said that, at the same time as the ISIS attack, the Suleiman Shah (al-Amshat) – a faction affiliated with the Syrian transitional government forces and backed by Turkey – shelled the Dayr Hafir area, east of Aleppo, with artillery and mortar fire.
The escalation targeted a populated area but caused no reported human or material losses, according to the SDF.
