KNC calls for end to Aleppo military operations
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Kurdish National Council (KNC) in Syria urged on Wednesday all parties to immediately halt military operations in Aleppo, lift the siege on Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyeh neighborhoods, and allow humanitarian and medical aid to enter.
In a statement, the KNC called for dialogue, de-escalation of media rhetoric, and protection of civilians, stressing the need to prevent residential areas from being drawn into armed conflict.
The Council expressed concern over ongoing clashes in Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyeh, predominantly Kurdish neighborhoods that host tens of thousands of civilians.
Since Tuesday, Aleppo has witnessed escalating clashes and mutual shelling between Syrian government forces and the Internal Security Forces (Asayish). Fighting intensified Wednesday, resulting in dozens of casualties, most of them civilians, according to local sources.
The KNC warned that the situation in these neighborhoods threatens to worsen the humanitarian and security crisis in the city. The Council extended condolences to the families of those killed and wished a speedy recovery for the wounded.
The statement criticized the Syrian army’s classification of the two neighborhoods as military zones and its call for civilian evacuation, describing it as a dangerous indicator that could lead to further civilian losses and repercussions across Syria.
The Council emphasized the need for the Syrian administration to launch a comprehensive political process that addresses unresolved issues and constitutionally protects the rights of all Syrian components, particularly the Kurdish people.
