Rubio, Syrian FM discuss deadly ISIS ambush on U.S. forces
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held on Sunday a phone call with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani to discuss the recent terrorist ambush targeting U.S. personnel in Syria, the State Department said.
In a statement attributed to Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott, the department said the attack killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter, describing them as “brave” individuals.
During the call, al-Shaibani offered condolences to the United States and reaffirmed the Syrian government’s commitment to degrading and destroying ISIS, which both sides view as a shared threat.
“The United States will hold all who hurt and threaten Americans accountable,” the statement added, underscoring Washington’s stance following the attack.
The assault comes amid continued security challenges in Syria’s central desert regions, where ISIS cells remain active despite the group’s territorial defeat.
ISIS has continued to carry out sporadic attacks in Syria’s vast Badia desert, exploiting difficult terrain and security gaps. U.S. forces remain deployed in Syria as part of the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS and supporting local partner forces.
