Washington pushes Syria toward security deal with Israel – Reuters

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The United States is pressing the Syrian government to conclude a security agreement with Israel, Reuters reported on Tuesday, citing informed sources.

According to the report, Syria has intensified its talks with Israel under American pressure, with the goal of reaching a limited security arrangement that could enable Damascus to regain recently seized territory.

The sources said the deal, if reached, would not amount to a full peace treaty but would represent a significant step forward. Washington is reportedly seeking tangible progress before the end of September, coinciding with the United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York, where US President Donald Trump is expected to highlight any diplomatic breakthrough.

Reuters noted that Israel has maintained a hardline position during months of indirect discussions, while Syria faces mounting challenges following unrest in the south. The report said that sectarian tensions there have fueled calls for partition, leaving Damascus in a weakened position.

Despite the pressure, US officials appear to be aiming for a limited security framework rather than a comprehensive peace accord. Such an agreement would focus on stabilizing frontlines and preventing further escalations along contested areas.

For Syria, regaining territory occupied by Israel in recent months is a central demand in the talks, while Washington views progress as critical to regional stability.

The sources told Reuters that even a partial deal would be considered an achievement, given the longstanding hostility and the difficulties of direct negotiations between Damascus and Tel Aviv.

No official statements were issued by either the Syrian or Israeli governments regarding the reported talks.
