Syrian Kurdish leader says Kurds are partners not guests
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Faisal Youssef, spokesperson for the Syrian Kurdish National Council (KNC), stressed on Sunday that “Kurds are not guests, but partners in the homeland,” calling for a just and comprehensive solution that recognizes Kurds as an integral people and a key partner in shaping Syria’s present and future.
Youssef criticized the repeated use of the phrase “our Kurdish brothers” by some Syrian Arab officials, saying it implicitly treats Kurds as guests or second-class citizens rather than equal partners.
In a post on his official Facebook page, he wrote: “True brotherhood can only exist through equality in rights and responsibilities. Yes, we are brothers, but real brotherhood means full partnership and equal inheritance in land, history, and the future.”
He added that if such phrases lack practical meaning, they serve only as empty rhetoric or a way to avoid addressing the Kurdish issue seriously.
Youssef emphasized that the Kurdish question must be central to any project for peace and cooperation in the Middle East.
He also called on the concerned governments to end policies of repression and marginalization and to work earnestly toward justice, equality, and genuine national partnership.
