Syria, Lebanon hold first meeting in Damascus to address key issues

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The joint Syrian-Lebanese committees convened on Tuesday in Damascus for their first meeting to address key unresolved issues between the two countries.

The session follows a recent agreement between Syria and Lebanon to form two joint committees tasked with addressing three critical files: determining the fate of approximately 2,000 Syrian prisoners held in Lebanese prisons, uncovering the whereabouts of Lebanese citizens missing in Syria for years, and settling disputed sections of the shared border.

Lebanon’s Minister of Justice, Adel Nassar, confirmed that two specialized committees—one based in Beirut and the other in Damascus—were form to follow up on these files.

Nassar added that the first round of discussions in Damascus focused on sensitive judicial and security issues, particularly the cases of Lebanese missing persons in Syria and Syrian detainees in Lebanon.

He further noted that the two sides agreed to hold a second meeting in Beirut in the near future to continue discussions and build on the progress achieved in Damascus.
