Syrian communities to convene meeting in Brussels to promote federalism
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Brussels will host on Sunday a meeting of the Syrian Communities Coordination Committee, aimed at establishing mechanisms for coordination among Syria’s diverse communities and launching a broad Syrian dialogue based on federalism, partnership, and pluralism, according to the meeting’s preparatory committee.
The Committee was formed on March 8 of this year through a coalition of Syrian civil and political initiatives working to develop frameworks for cooperation among the country’s various components.
Mona Ghanem, member of the preparatory committee, told North Press that the meeting — held under the title “Initiative for Dialogue on Federalism and Democracy in Syria” — will serve as an initial platform for exchanging views on how to launch a comprehensive national dialogue that addresses the root causes of the Syrian crisis, grounded in federalism, partnership, and pluralism.
Ghanem said that the agenda will also include discussions on setting a date for a general conference in Qamishli in northeastern Syria.
She added that the Committee brings together activists, intellectuals, and public figures representing Syria’s social mosaic, including Kurds, Alawites, Druze, Sunnis, Syriacs, Assyrians, Armenians, Ismailis, Turkmens, Circassians, and others with deep historical roots in the country’s national identity.
The Committee’s core principles affirm Syria’s territorial and societal unity, while advocating constitutional recognition of the country’s ethnic, religious, sectarian, and cultural diversity — viewing it as a source of richness and strength rather than division or conflict.
Ghanem emphasized that the Committee recognizes the national and cultural rights of all Syrian communities and is committed to building a state founded on the rule of law, separation of powers, and the protection of rights and public freedoms.
The meeting is expected to issue an outcome document titled: “Preparatory Meeting of the Initiative for Dialogue on Federalism and Democracy in Syria.”
