Tribal clashes kill two, including defense member, in east syria
DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – Two individuals were killed and five others injured on Saturday following armed tribal clashes in a town near al-Bukamal, in eastern Deir ez-Zor, amid escalating disputes over personal and financial matters.
Heavy gunfire erupted in the town of al-Suway’iyah, located in the eastern countryside of al-Bukamal, as members of the al-Karkoush and al-Fateikh families clashed over a monetary disagreement related to the sale of a car, a local source told North Press.
The clashes, which involved the use of automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades, resulted in the deaths of Mohammed al-Fateikh, a member of Syria’s Ministry of Defense, and civilian Fajr al-Karkoush. Among the wounded were Mohammed al-Karkoush—also affiliated with the Ministry of Defense—and three additional civilians.
According to eyewitness accounts, the confrontation began when a dispute over a car payment escalated into open violence. Despite attempts by local Internal Security Forces to contain the fighting, efforts to de-escalate were unsuccessful, the source said.
“The exchange of fire was intense and prolonged. Security patrols tried to intervene, but the situation spiraled beyond their control,” the source added on condition of anonymity for security reasons.
Residents of al-Suway’iyah have appealed to tribal elders and community leaders to mediate the dispute and prevent further bloodshed. Civil society figures in the region often play an essential role in resolving inter-family conflicts in the absence of formal judicial intervention.
The incident underscores ongoing challenges in maintaining local stability in Syria’s eastern provinces, where tribal dynamics frequently intersect with security vacuums left in areas nominally under Syrian government control. While most of the Deir ez-Zor region east of the Euphrates is administered by the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) and secured by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
