U.S. envoy demands Syrian government to protect minorities
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – U.S. Special Envoy for Syria, Thomas Barrack, urged on Monday the Syrian transitional government to take concrete steps to integrate and protect minority communities.
Barrack stressed that Damascus bears responsibility for the recent violence in the south and will be held accountable.
Speaking at a press conference in Beirut, Barrack stated that the Syrian transitional government has a duty to promote minority inclusion and to engage constructively with neighboring countries.
He pointed out that the United States is following developments in southern Syria with deep concern, sorrow, and empathy, adding that what has happened there is horrifying.
Barrack emphasized that efforts are underway to understand how the Syrian government can effectively ensure the inclusion and safety of minority groups.
He indicated that Damascus has a central role to play in securing and safeguarding its minorities.
The U.S. envoy also commented on Washington’s limits regarding its regional influence, acknowledging that they cannot force Tel Aviv to do everything.
