Cautious calm returns to Suwayda as first evacuees reach Daraa
SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – The first group of stranded families was successfully evacuated on Monday from Suwayda Governorate in southern Syria to neighboring Daraa Governorate as part of an agreement between the Syrian transitional government and local armed factions in the area.
North Press, through its network of local correspondents, confirmed that the first wave of evacuees reached Daraa countryside earlier today.
Local media outlets reported that more than 300 individuals were safely evacuated from the embattled city.
The evacuations come in the wake of a nationwide ceasefire declared on July 19 by the Syrian presidency, aimed at de-escalating violence in all regions.
While the situation remains fragile, the evacuation marks a significant step in reducing immediate risk to civilians and implementing the ceasefire agreement on the ground.
For a second consecutive day, Suwayda has witnessed cautious calm following a week of violent clashes and rising tensions between local Druze factions and Bedouin tribal militants backed by government forces.
