Druze spiritual leadership rejects government’s ceasefire deal in Suwayda
SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – The Spiritual Leadership of the Druze Community in Suwayda Governorate, southern Syria, declared on Wednesday that it does not recognize any agreement, negotiation, or authorization involving what it described as “armed gangs falsely calling themselves a government.”
The statement came just hours after Syria’s Ministry of Interior announced a ceasefire agreement in Suwayda, which included the deployment of security checkpoints and the reintegration of the region under full state authority.
In a strongly worded message addressed to both local and international audiences, the Druze leadership warned that any individual or group acting unilaterally or entering into agreements outside the unified position of the community would face legal and social consequences—without exception or leniency.
“We, in the Spiritual Leadership, affirm the necessity of continuing legitimate self-defense and resisting until every inch of our governorate is liberated from these gangs,” the statement read. “This is a national, humanitarian, and moral duty that cannot be compromised.”
The leadership also called on remaining members of government-affiliated forces to surrender, promising humane treatment in return.
“Those who lay down their arms and surrender to our brave youth will be under our protection,” the statement added. “They will not be humiliated or harmed—this is a reflection of our values and the traditions we were raised on.”
