Syrian Minister of Defense announces ceasefire in Suwayda
SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – Syrian Minister of Defense, Murhaf Abu Qasra, announced on Tuesday a complete ceasefire in the city of Suwayda, southern Syria, following an agreement with local dignitaries and community leaders.
This comes amid reports suggesting that the Ministry of Defense is preparing to issue a statement ordering the withdrawal of heavy military vehicles from the city.
In a post on “X” in Arabic, Abu Qasra stated, “To all units operating inside Suwayda, we announce a full ceasefire, with the exception of responding to sources of fire or any attacks by outlaw groups.”
He added, “We have issued strict orders to the forces deployed in Suwayda to ensure the safety of civilians, uphold social peace, and protect both public and private property from opportunistic acts.”
The Defense Minister also confirmed that preparations are underway to transfer security responsibilities in the city to the security forces.
“As soon as combing operations are complete, we will begin handing over the city’s neighborhoods to the security forces to help restore order, ensure the safe return of residents to their homes, and stabilize the situation.”
He further noted, “We have ordered the deployment of military police units within Suwayda to monitor conduct and hold any violators accountable.”
