Shells rock Syria’s Suwayda amid clashes
SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – Several shells struck on Tuesday morning neighborhoods in the center of Suwayda city, southern Syria, coinciding with intense clashes in the city’s western countryside, particularly around the Kanaker area.
North Press correspondent in Suwayda reported that multiple shells landed in different parts of the city center, accompanied by repeated explosions that sparked widespread panic among residents.
As of the time of reporting, the extent of material damage or casualties from the shelling had not yet been confirmed.
Earlier, security forces of the transitional government announced the imposition of a curfew as security forces prepared to enter the city following two days of escalating violence and deadly confrontations.
In parallel, the spiritual leadership of the community issued a statement welcoming the deployment of security forces. The leadership called on all armed factions in the governorate to cooperate fully with the Ministries of Defense and Interior and to surrender their weapons to the appropriate authorities.
Ahmed al-Dalati, head of security forces in Suwayda, welcomed the statement by the spiritual leadership and emphasized its importance in restoring calm.
Dalati appealed to leaders of armed factions and groups operating outside the law to cease any actions that hinder the entry of government forces. He urged them to hand over their weapons, stressing that such cooperation is essential to preserve civil peace, protect citizens, and ensure the stability of the region.
