3 government soldiers killed amid escalating clashes in Syria’s Suwayda
SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – A government source told North Press on Monday that three members of the Syrian Ministry of Defense were killed and 10 others injured in the vicinity of Suwayda, southern Syria, following an attack by what the source described as “outlawed groups.”
Security tensions have escalated in Suwayda since July 12, sparked by an incident involving the robbery and abduction of a driver on the Suwayda-Damascus highway.
The incident quickly evolved into armed clashes between rival groups, resulting in approximately 30 fatalities and more than 100 injuries.
In response, the Syrian Ministries of Defense and Interior announced the deployment of additional forces to rural areas of Suwayda in an effort to quell the violence.
The confrontations have reportedly involved local factions from Suwayda, armed tribesmen from Bedouin communities, and militant groups from the neighboring Daraa Governorate.
“The recurring security crises in Suwayda are a result of the intransigence of isolationist elements,” said Nour al-Din Baba, Interior Ministry spokesperson. “The only solution lies in restoring the authority of the state, reactivating its institutions, and allowing official security and military bodies to fulfill their natural role in protecting civilians, securing their livelihoods, and preserving civil peace and national unity in the province.”
